Feedback 31.10.10

You have made a good start here. Dylan, you seem to have added the most to the blog so far - well done. I think you need to add a little more to the post about the top 20 downloads. Try to realte it to your video ideas. What can you learn from this research?

You should have completed your research and planning by now, however, you ae yet to put your music track/artist/band on here and an outline of what you are going to do! You should be starting production this week. Don't forget to include your audience research/questionnaire and results on here. You need to know what your audience wants/expects and try to use this information in your planning.

I expect each of you to be at at least one workshop this week but as your are quite a way behind where you should be by now, you will need to come in more than once.

Any problems etc, then see me.

Task to complete...

Before we start our planning and research we have split all our work evenly so that each member of the group have a fair share of the work and give the same amount of effort. We split all 16 tasks so that Lucy will do 5, Dylan will do 5 and Lily will complete 6, and here is how it's been split...

LUCY

  • Outlined the equipment/technologies to be used
  • Outline a full synopsis of your film and sequence - what it will be about, who the main characters are, what will happen in the film and the sequence
  • Found your music/music fx. - discussed the websites you've found these on or how you've created them
  • Written the script for any voice-overs or dialogue
  • Covered all the key concepts in your research and planning? (Genre, Narrative, Representation, Media Language, Institution and Audience)
DYLAN
  • Identified institution to produce your text
  • Researched how to use titles in trailers, music videos etc.
  • Produced a detailed storyboard. (Included written instructions for all the members of the crew for production and post-production eg. editing)
  • Uploaded storyboard onto blog - evaluated/ justified ideas. Animated storyboard?)
  • REferenced all your research and planning sources? Where did you find out this information? (Failure to do this is plagiarism!)
LILY

  • Identified target audience - Produced audience questionnaire and presented/reflected on findings
  • Used media theory to describe your target audience - demographic and psychographic profiling techniques (socio-economic scale, Young & Rubicam)
  • Drawn up props list, created costume plans, location shots, casting shots and film schedules
  • Identified roles each group member will be playing during production (who's responsible for what?)
  • Organised actors
  • Completed a risk assessment form
We hopefully plan on having ALL these completed by 12-11-10.

Arctic Monkeys Video

INDIE GENRE

Indie music stands for Independent music, which at first meant the artist didn't have a record label, but it is since changed to become a type of genre with its own recognisable conventions. Indie music is still considered to be a relatively new genre as the first ever UK Indie Chart started only in 1980.

ANALYSIS OF A MUSIC VIDEO

The music video we decided to analyse is, 'Arctic Monkeys - Fluorescent Adolescent'. The reason we chose to do this music video was we thought if tied in with the genre, indie. Indie is rapidly becoming the popular choice of music in britain with their debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, released in early 2006, became the fastest-selling debut album (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arctic_Monkeys). And as we are targeting a similar audience, this is the best video to analyse as the conventions used are obviously appealing to the right people.

The video follows a relatively easy story line although it doesn't link to the lyrics in the song. It is a simple video as it doesn't use any particularly difficult techniques, except the fire at the end and the most impressive parts of the video use different camera angles and lighting. The colouring seems to be tinted to give it an old, vintage look which appears authentic. The camera is hand held at the beginning which adds pace the the video and makes the viewer feel involved. There are many different shots of the characters, close up's show the facial expressions which indicate the story line, as well as the flashback and the subtitle which shows what the character is saying, there are also photographs to show the story of the characters before the video. The video is quite fast paced and uses quite a lot of jump shots to move the narrative along.
The clothing is laid-back and indie associated, which is slightly more relaxed than what our actors will wear. The other characters wear clown outfits which is obviously a link to some of the lyrics in the song- "you took a left off last laugh lane", and it also makes it easier to identify the personality of the characters. The video is effective as it keeps the viewer interested, it has a lot of action in it which will amuse the target audience and therefore they will be listening to the song and boosting it's sales.

Intital Ideas

Our group includes Lucy, Lily and Dylan, and we are planning on doing the music video promotion with the muti-pac. We feel that this task will  let us use all the knowlegde and skills we gained last year and apply that to our music video as well as give us the opportunity to try and use new techniques such as green screening. In addition to this music videos have no fixed conventions which allows us to be totally imaginative.

The music we choice to use in our music video is from a local band called, 'H-Eyes' who have agreed to us using their music. In addition to this they have also agreed to be filmed for the music video which will give us their us their opinion on the video and let them give their input through out filming.

The song we are doing is 'Falling Star' that fits into the 'Indie/ Indie Rock' genre which is becoming an increasingly popular genre with successful artists such as, Arctic Monkeys, Oasis and Radiohead

After listening to the lyrics a few times we decided the songs main focus of the video would be around drug as the corus says, 'Can't afford to feed your addiction'. With this we thought that we would have the band playing on top of a hill either during sunset or at night with some lighting and possibly some smoke affects. Then throughtout the song we would have flashbacks into the narritive of someone taking the drug heroin. In order for this to be effective and work well we decided that these flashbacks would be in black and white so that our audience would be able to distinguish between the story and the band.
